Why add Optimist Screening to COVID-19 safety protocols?

      • Optimist Screening Loss of Smell Test Kit is commercially available to help identify one of the early symptoms associated with COVID-19 – loss of smell. Many recent studies world wide indicate that loss of smell (Anosmia) is associated with an 80%+ likelihood of progressing to positive test results for COVID-19. Screening for loss of smell works particularly well as an add-on to temperature checks as COVID-19 patients are 27 times more likely to experience smell loss but are only around 2.2 to 2.6 times more likely to have fever, cough or respiratory difficulty, when compared to patients without COVID-19.

Why screen for loss of smell? Aren’t temperature checks enough?

      • It's a logical question. Think of it like this, if you knew there was a strong likelihood that you had COVID-19, would you get yourself tested, self isolate and begin COVID treatment sooner? The obvious answer to anyone with a conscience is–absolutely. Learning of possible infection 1 to 8 days earlier than temperature checks alone enables a greater degree of social responsibility in slowing the spread of the virus.

Where are the scientific studies concerning loss of smell and COVID-19 detection?

      • There is widespread scientific consensus for anosmia as an early detector of COVID-19.

Has Optimist Screening been clinically validated?

      • Yes. Optimist Screening has clinical validation through use in a hospital setting under proper scientific protocols to support confirmation and measure effectiveness.

Who should use Optimist Screening?

      • Anyone seeking to provide and maintain a safer environment. For businesses looking to re-open or maintain operations safely and responsibly, protecting employees and customers is important. For schools to reopen safely, parents, teachers, and students need to feel that the school grounds are as safe as possible. Because healthcare facilities are driven by scientific consensus for improving safety protocols, incorporating loss of smell (Anosmia) testing into their protocols makes sense. Senior Care facilities, in particular, are hot-spots for the spread of the virus, and as they expand their testing protocols to include Anosmia testing, Optimist Screening provides a very simple, low cost option.

What if the test shows loss of smell?

      • First, don't panic. Seek medical attention if the screening indicates a loss of smell. Consult a healthcare professional if you have concerns.

How should an organization calculate the number of screening kits required?

To work out the right number of kits, consider these factors:

1. Number of employees to be tested.

2. Number of visitors to be tested.

3. Number of tests per day for each person entering your facility (remember that each day, employees will return to work after spending time with family or friends who could be contagious).

4. Number of locations.

5. How many entrances per location.

6. Each Optimist Screening Kit performs 560 tests.

What’s the easiest way to buy Optimist Screening kits?

      • Kits are available for purchase on our website or Amazon. For a large quantity of kits, contact us here.

How often can the test be administered?

      • As often as you like. More screenings taken equates to more confidence infection has been avoided. It's as safe as smelling the myriad of scents one encounters every day. Plus, the cost per test is so low, there's no reason not to screen again and again.

What’s in the spray?

      • Optimist Screening utilizes technology commonly applied to the treatment of Asthma–technology doctors and patients around the world have trusted for decades. Optimist has adapted it to dispense a specific amount of a scent which is dispensed with the same propellant used in Asthma inhalers – a pharmaceutical grade HFA 134a propellant, perfectly harmless to anyone.

Can’t someone just test for loss of smell at home?

      • Absolutely. The soap in your shower, the food on your stove, the coffee in your cup – all are great fragrances for measuring sense of smell. The issue is most people don't realize the sense of smell can disappear within a few days of contracting the virus, so they aren't testing at home. Organizations need Optimist Screening to normalize consistent, reliable testing for employees, customers and visitors. All of us need confidence that a particular workplace, school, store, restaurant, place of worship, venue (etc) is screening as rigorously as possible.

Can Optimist Screening be used while pregnant?

      • Yes. Optimist Screening is safe because, in simple terms, it's a harmless smell test. The scents have no harmful additives, so it's not much different than smelling things one encounters every day. The difference is Optimist Screening is conducted in a more controlled and reliable setting.

Why does Optimist Screening avoid using the smell of peanut butter?

      • While it is one of the most recognizable smells in the world, a small percentage who are allergic to peanuts may be adversely affected if they smell it. Optimist Screening scents are chosen for their international recognizability and acceptability.
